Cross River gorillas are critically endangered species, and there are only 200 to 300 Cross River gorillas left in the wild. Their population became smaller because their habitat in forests were destroyed by humans that cleared forests for agriculture and livestock purposes as well as for timbers. Cross River gorillas also have been illegally hunted.
