The United States tries to protect 30% of U.S. lands and 30% of its ocean to protect wildlife by 2030.

Only 12% of lands and 23% of the ocean are protected in the U.S. The area of U.S. lands is 3.8 million mi2. How much more lands need to be protected by 2030?

ANSWER

3.8 x 0.3 – 3.8 x 0.12 = 1.14 – 0.456

1.14 – 0.456 = 0.684 million mi2 = 684 thousand mi2

Or 3.8 x (0.3 – 0.12) = 0.684 million mi2 = 684 thousand mi2
