2019-2020 Crayon Recycling for a Happier Community Project

We collected 70 pounds of crayons (equivalent to about 8,000 individual crayons) from the Warrick County School Supply Recycling Challenge in May 2019. To use these crayons effectively, we launched the Crayon Recycling for a Happier Community Project.

The main purpose of this projects is to
- Promote recycling and divert used school supplies from landfills
- Effectively use crayons collected from the Warrick County School Supply Recycling Challenge by making new crayons
- Raise $500 to help local teachers get school supplies for their classrooms by selling recycled crayons
- Raise awareness on recycling and waste reduction
- Build a stronger and happier community

To prevent the used crayons from being sent to landfills and give new lives to the crayons, we decided to recreate the crayons to new crayons. To do that, we take 5 steps.

First, we peeled the paper wrappers of crayons.

Next, we sorted crayons by color.

And we melted the crayons in the oven (200F).

And we poured the wax into molds.

Lastly, once the heat is removed, crayons were removed from the mold.

For monsters, we melted crayons directly in molds.

HELPING CHILDREN IFENTIFY EMOTIONS
In learning to identify their feelings, children build emotional intelligence skills. Use these crayons not only to motivate children to explore their imagination, but to help them develop an emotional vocabulary so they can talk about their feelings!
